Lights, checks and the vehicle's paperwork

Three things underpin safe driving without being the wheel itself: lights, routine checks and correct registration. Lights decide how early you see and are seen in darkness, rain or fog. Routine checks catch small faults before they grow. Registration, insurance and the periodic inspection make sure you actually have the right to use the vehicle on the road. These are details invisible in driving skill — but on the test they show up often as specific rule questions.

Lighting rules and the periodic inspection

Under Trafikförordningen 3 kap 49 § dipped beam must be on throughout the journey, regardless of the time of day. Under Trafikförordningen 3 kap 50 § main beam must not be used when meeting another vehicle or behind one — you risk dazzling the other driver. With main beam you can see a person up to 300 metres away, so use it as often as possible on dark country roads. Front fog lamps may be used in fog, snow or heavy rain; rear fog lamps when visibility falls below 50 metres. Under Fordonsförordningen 6 kap the first periodic inspection takes place 36 months after first registration, then every 24 months, and from year 8 every 14 months.

Scenario

Decision sequence: early winter trip with a lamp out

You are about to drive on an early November morning and find one of the dipped-beam lamps is out, the windscreen has an oily film and a warning light has been on for a couple of days unattended. Three options: drive as planned, drive with extra care, or fix the lamp, clean the windscreen and have the warning light read before driving. The right decision is the last one. Dipped beam is mandatory under Trafikförordningen 3 kap 49 §, a dirty windscreen cuts your reaction margin in the dark, and an ignored warning light may signal a fault that the workshop finds in five minutes.

Exam trap: routine checks are not only for long trips

Many conclude that routine checks are needed before longer trips and at the inspection. On the test that is the wrong answer. Small faults — weak lamps, low washer fluid, poor wipers — build up risk every day until something fails at a critical moment. The check happens every time you start the car: a glance at the instrument panel, a look around the vehicle in darkness or bad weather, and action when you spot a fault. Not 'when there is time'.
