Steering, suspension and wheel alignment

You will learn, among other things:

Driver's hands placed symmetrically on opposite sides of the steering wheel.

How the car responds to your inputs at the wheel

Steering, suspension and wheel alignment decide how the car responds to your inputs at the wheel. When they work, the car feels straight, stable and predictable. When something starts to fail it usually shows first as vibrations, a car that pulls to one side, or steering that feels vague at low speed. The changes are subtle and develop slowly that is what makes them dangerous. You adapt without noticing how much your margin has shrunk.

Rule

The vehicle must be roadworthy

A vehicle in traffic must be in a condition that allows safe operation. In practice that means steering, alignment and suspension work normally, nothing rattles, and the wheel sits straight when the car drives straight. If you notice clear deviations, deal with them before the next trip. Under Fordonsförordningen 6 kap these systems are checked at the periodic inspection, but that does not relieve you of the duty to check function yourself between inspections.

Scenario

Decision sequence: car pulls to the right on a straight section

You are driving on straight asphalt and constantly need to correct the wheel to the left to keep the car in lane. You have not crashed or driven over any large obstacle. Three options: keep going as usual, adapt and drive to the workshop when convenient, or book an inspection as soon as possible. The right decision is the last one. The car may have shifted alignment, worn tyres or faulty suspension and each such fault extends braking distance and reduces safety in an evasive manoeuvre.

Exam trap

Exam trap: gradual changes you adapt without noticing

The most common mistake is accepting slow deterioration. Steering gets a little vaguer, suspension a little rattlier, the wheel a little crooked and you start compensating without realising. On the test's photo questions this appears as 'when should you fix it?' The answer is: as soon as you notice a clear deviation. Not 'when it gets really bad', because by then you are in a situation where the vehicle is not doing what you think it is.
