On-ramps, lane changes, minimum speed, exits, and what to do if the car breaks down.
Motorways are closed to: pedestrians, cyclists, mopeds, horses, farm vehicles, and any vehicle that can't sustain at least 40 km/h. The motorway symbol (green sign with two separated lanes) marks the start; the symbol with a diagonal slash marks the end.
Use the FULL acceleration lane, accelerate to motorway speed, signal left, find a gap, merge smoothly. Motorway traffic has priority and does NOT need to brake for you. Stopping on the on-ramp is dangerous and prohibited.
The left lane is for overtaking, not cruising. After overtaking, move back right. Never undertake on the right (exception: heavy queue where all lanes move slowly).
Signal right well in advance. Move to the exit lane before reducing speed. Reduce speed ONLY once in the exit lane, not before. Missed the exit: continue to the next one, never reverse on a motorway.
Move onto the hard shoulder if you can. Hazard lights on. Everyone leaves by the passenger side and waits behind the barrier, not beside the car. Set out the warning triangle. No distance is fixed in law. The guidance is at least 100 metres, and further where speeds are higher. What matters more than the number: if your car sits beyond a bend or a crest, put the triangle before it, so drivers meet the warning before they meet the car. Call 112 if the situation is dangerous.
