Situations where you may not overtake — even if the road looks clear.
Overtaking is forbidden in the following situations: • Before and at an unguarded pedestrian crossing • Before and at a railway crossing • On crests or curves where you can't see far enough • Where visibility is limited (fog, snowfall) • Where there is a solid centre line on your side • Where a No overtaking road sign applies • Immediately before or in a junction where you have yield or stop duty
Even where technically allowed, if you can hesitate about whether it fits, don't do it. A cut-short overtake into oncoming traffic is one of the deadliest situations on rural roads.
Overtaking across a solid centre line or past a No overtaking sign: fine 2,000–4,000 SEK, plus a licence sanction (warning or revocation) depending on circumstances.
Check road signs ~50 m ahead of suspect points, a no-overtaking rule often starts just before a curve or crest where visibility drops.
