When exiting or turning across a cycle path, you must yield to cyclists.
Cyclists on a cycle path have priority when you: • Turn right or left across the cycle path (into or out of a street) • Exit a property or parking across a cycle path • Pass a cycle crossing (blue cycle symbols on the road) This applies even when the cycle path is on your blind side. Check mirrors and blind spot before turning.
Classic case: you're at a junction and want to turn right. A cyclist approaches from behind on the right on the cycle path. You must wait, the cyclist has priority. Turning in front of them is the most common serious cyclist crash in cities.
At a cykelöverfart (the newer blue cycle markings) drivers must yield, just like at a pedestrian crossing. At a cykelpassage (only road markings, no signs) the cyclist does NOT have priority, but in practice you should still yield.
A right turn signal and mirror check alone aren't enough. Turn your head over your right shoulder to check the blind spot just before turning. Combine mirror checks, head checks, and extra distance, together they give a reliable view of cyclists on the bike lane.
