Seconds after the crash: secure the scene first

1. Hazard lights on, immediately. 2. Move the vehicle as far from traffic as possible, hard shoulder, verge. 3. Put on a reflective vest before you step out. 4. Set out the warning triangle. No distance is fixed in law. The guidance is at least 100 metres, and further where speeds are higher. What matters more than the number: if your car sits beyond a bend or a crest, put the triangle before it, so drivers meet the warning before they meet the car. 5. Wait behind the barrier, or well away from the traffic. Running onto a motorway to help is the commonest cause of a second collision.
