Rule

Opening the door: the Dutch reach

When opening the car door after parking: use the Dutch reach, open the door with your opposite hand (right hand for the driver's door). Your body then rotates automatically and you see cyclists approaching from behind.

Heads up

30 zones are absolute

30 km/h zones in residential areas and near schools always apply, police and municipalities allow no exceptions. Driving 40 km/h, ten km/h over the limit, already means a 1,500 kr fine.

Exam trap

Space when passing a cyclist

Where no bike lane exists, cyclists must keep to the right edge of the lane. When overtaking, keep at least 1.5 m of side clearance; the law requires a safe distance (Trafikförordningen ch. 3 §33), and passing too close can be a traffic offence.
