Prevents the wheels from locking under hard braking. This lets you steer while braking, critical for avoiding an obstacle. Keep the pedal FIRMLY pressed. Do NOT pump the brake.

Tip
What ABS feels like
During emergency braking, ABS feels like a pulsing vibration in the pedal and a humming sound. This is NORMAL, the system is working. Don't release the pressure.
Rule
ESP / ESC: Electronic Stability Program
Detects that the car is starting to skid and brakes individual wheels selectively to restore the intended direction. Can distinguish between over- and understeer and correct both automatically.
Exam trap
Neither ABS nor ESP replaces careful driving
Both systems help you AVOID an accident, but they can't override physics. Keep distance, slow down on slippery roads, and drive to the conditions. A system with no grip is still with no grip.
Heads up
The warning lights
ABS light steady means ABS is inoperative (regular brakes still work, but without anti-lock protection). ESP light flashing means ESP is actively working (common in slippery conditions). ESP light steady means system fault, fix soon.
