Grip, slippery roads and winter equipment
On a winter road, grip can drop by half or more. Black ice doesn't look like ice — the road just looks shiny and wet. Slush and packed snow demand entirely different car inputs than summer tarmac. Always assume the grip is worse than it feels.
Stopping distance on ice can be four times longer than on dry tarmac. That means: double or triple the gap you normally keep. Brake early, gently, in stages. Hard braking locks the wheels — and ABS only helps if you have grip in the first place.
Winter tyres are mandatory 1 December to 31 March when winter conditions apply. Minimum tread depth is 3 mm. Studded tyres are allowed 1 October to 15 April. Clean windows, working washer fluid and a frost-free roof are also part of the law — not 'nice to have'.
Sweden's winter is dark. More than half your journey can fall in darkness or twilight. Plan: charging for an EV in the cold, a torch, warm clothes, a hot drink, an ice scraper. A flat battery or a cold breakdown can quickly become an accident.
The speed that feels 'normal' after a summer of driving can be a slippery disaster in winter. Recalibrate every time the temperature drops — habit slides faster than grip does.
Winter tyres improve grip — but not enough to make up for summer-style speed. On ice, a car with winter tyres still slides. The law requires the tyres; safety requires you to adapt your speed too.
You're driving 60 km/h on a polished winter road. The car ahead brakes lightly. You notice your car slipping a bit. What do you do? Lift off the throttle completely, avoid the brake, steer gently. Next time: drop to 40 before you need to. A slip is feedback from the road.
