Right of Way and Priority

The right-hand rule, yielding and main roads

You will learn, among other things:

Intersection with a car from the right and oncoming traffic

The Right-Hand Rule

At unsigned junctions, the right-hand rule applies: you give way to vehicles coming from your right. The rule applies even when you're on what looks like the 'bigger' road. Don't assume road width or speed gives you priority signs decide.

Give Way, Stop and Main Roads

Give way (triangle sign): slow down, stop if needed. Stop (octagon sign): you must come to a full stop, even on an empty road. Main road (yellow diamond): you have priority over traffic from side roads, but not automatically when turning left or against oncoming traffic.

Rule

Turning Left

When turning left, give way to oncoming traffic going straight or turning right. Pull well into the junction and wait for a gap. Never turn 'on faith' when your view is blocked by another left-turner behind you.

Trams and Emergency Vehicles

Trams have special right of way and can't dodge you you yield to the tram. Emergency vehicles with blue lights and sirens get a clear path, even if that means mounting a kerb or passing through a red light when it's safe to do so.

Heads up

Priority Isn't Permission to Drive

Priority means others must yield to you not that you may drive even if it would crash. If someone is in your way who shouldn't be, you wait. Safety always overrides priority.

Exam trap

Exam Trap: Combined Rules

The exam likes to combine the right-hand rule with a left turn in the same question. You may have to yield to the car on your right AND to oncoming traffic going straight both at once. Judge each vehicle separately.

Scenario

Decision Chain: Unsigned Junction, Left Turn

You're turning left at an unsigned junction. A car comes from your right, an oncoming car goes straight. Who do you let through first? Both you stay put until both have passed. Don't think 'my turn' until the street is clear in both directions.
