Roundabouts

Entering, positioning and exiting roundabouts

You will learn, among other things:

Car in a roundabout signalling when exiting

Entering a Roundabout

When entering a roundabout, you must give way to vehicles already inside. Slow down before you reach it don't brake inside the circle. Choose your lane early and stay in it.

Choosing a Lane

In a small single-lane roundabout, there's one lane to use. In a larger roundabout, your exit decides: right lane for the first exit, left lane to go further round. Signs at the entry tell you which read them before you turn in.

Rule

Signalling

Indicate right as you leave the roundabout, one exit before your own. Use an indicator on the way in only if you're clearly positioned in the left lane for a late exit. The official Swedish rule: signal out, not in.

Heads up

Inside the Circle, You Have Priority

Once you're inside the roundabout, you have priority over everyone wanting to enter. Don't stop to be 'polite' to a driver at an entry it confuses and creates a crash risk.

Exam trap

Exam Trap: Switching Lanes Inside the Circle

Most common mistake: switching from the left to the right lane mid-roundabout to make your exit. Illegal and dangerous. If you're in the wrong lane, go round once more and try again.

Scenario

Decision Chain: Entering with Traffic from the Left

You approach a roundabout. A car is already inside, coming from your left. What do you do? Slow down, stop if needed, let it pass. Whoever is inside always has priority whether they appear on your left or your right.
