What does the sign mean?
The sign shows the distance to a level crossing in thirds.
Where it applies
- Three bars stand under the level crossing warning sign outside built-up areas.
- Two bars mark two thirds of the distance.
- One bar marks the last third.
Exam trap
The bars do not mean the number of tracks or metres. They show how much of the distance is left.
Do not mix up with
St Andrew's cross: that sign stands immediately before the crossing.
