When snow chains are worth fitting
Snow chains are optional in Sweden, nothing requires them in the south. They are worth fitting when: • You are driving up into the mountains (Åre, Sälen, Lindvallen and so on) • The road is deep in snow or icy and steep • You are stuck and need to get out of a drift They matter legally as well as practically. Trafikförordningen 4 kap 18 a § asks for winter tyres or equivalent equipment, and Transportstyrelsen's general advice to TSFS 2009:19 3 § treats a suitable anti-skid device, chains, for instance, as exactly that. On bare asphalt chains may not be used. They damage the road and destroy themselves quickly.
