Rules, distances and common prohibitions
Stopping = a short pause to let people on/off or to load. Parking = anything beyond that, or whenever you leave the vehicle. The legal difference is the purpose, not the duration. That's often the key the exam tests.
You may not park within 10 metres before a pedestrian crossing, junction or cycle passage. The rule applies before, not after. Measure from the nearest edge of the crossing/junction, not the centre. On the exam: check the direction in the picture.
Within 20 metres before and 5 metres after a bus stop, you may neither stop nor park, unless a supplementary plate says otherwise. Local parking signs override general rules — always read the full sign combination.
The most common parking trap on the exam is direction. The 10-metre prohibition almost always sits before the crossing. Right after the crossing you can usually park, unless something else says no.
You think you're parked 'far enough' from the crossing, but it's 8 metres. That's an illegal park. Pace it out if you're not sure — an adult stride is about 0.7 metres.
You're looking for parking. There's an empty bay 6 metres before a pedestrian crossing. Don't stop there. The distance is too short, even though the bay is marked. Look further on, past the crossing.
