Joining, exiting and special rules
Motorways are reserved for motor vehicles that can hold at least 40 km/h. Bicycles, mopeds, tractors, horse traffic, pedestrians and light motorcycles (class II) are not allowed. Expressway rules are similar but at-grade junctions can exist.
In the on-ramp's acceleration lane, match your speed to the motorway's flow, not the other way around. Use the full lane — you have its whole length to accelerate and find a gap. Merge at the same speed as the surrounding traffic, not 20 km/h slower.
Stopping is forbidden except in a real emergency. If you break down: pull as far onto the hard shoulder as you can, turn on hazard lights, only exit on the traffic side once you've checked behind. Place the warning triangle about 150 metres behind on a motorway.
At 100 km/h you travel about 28 metres per second. A three-second rule gives 84 metres — minimum. In a queue, expect the car ahead to brake hard without warning. Leave room even when everything is rolling smoothly.
On a motorway you overtake on the left. Right-side overtaking is only permitted in dense queueing traffic where the entire left lane is moving slower than the right one — not otherwise.
At the end of the on-ramp, traffic is already at 100 km/h. If you stop there, you have to merge from a standstill into fast traffic. That's more dangerous than pushing in — use the acceleration lane.
You're joining the motorway via an on-ramp. The right lane is dense — cars come at 100 km/h with short gaps. What do you do? Accelerate to their speed, spot a gap early, signal, weave in. Slow down and you lose the chance.
