Brakes the vehicle's most important safety system

How the brake turns decisions into stops

The brake is the only system that directly turns the driver's decision into a stop. When you press the pedal, the brake pads clamp the discs and friction between tyres and road does the rest. Braking distance follows simple physics: it grows with the square of speed. At 50 km/h on dry asphalt the braking distance is about 12 metres at 100 km/h it becomes around 50 metres. Add one second of reaction and the stopping distance becomes much longer in both cases.

Rule

Brakes must work and feel normal

A vehicle in traffic must have brakes that work to the vehicle's specification. That means a firm pedal, brake action on all wheels and no squeal, vibration or pull to one side under braking. If you notice abnormal pedal feel or hear scraping from the brakes, deal with it before the next trip the brake is not a system you can defer. Under Fordonsförordningen 6 kap the periodic inspection measures braking performance, but the check also happens every time you sit at the wheel.

Scenario

Decision sequence: soft brake pedal in the morning

Before you start your daily trip you press the brake pedal and notice it feels softer than usual and travels far down. Traffic is calm and you are short on time. Three options: drive because 'it seems to work', drive carefully and book a workshop the same week, or stay put and have the car checked before driving. The right decision is the last one. A soft pedal can be air in the line or low brake fluid either way you risk not being able to stop when it really matters.

Exam trap

Exam trap: ABS does not shorten the distance, it preserves steering

Many believe stability control and ABS make braking distance shorter. They do not. The ABS's role is to stop the wheels from locking, so you can still steer around an obstacle under hard braking. On loose gravel or fresh snow ABS can even give a slightly longer distance. The difference is not how fast you stop it is whether you stop straight ahead or have the option to swerve. Always assume that the underlying physics speed, weight and road surface sets the ceiling.
